State authorities are primarily responsible for promoting and respecting human rights, and for protecting human rights defenders (HRDs). Through our advocacy and campaigns we raise awareness about the risks faced by human rights defenders to hold authorities accountable at the national and internal level.

Visibility is also a powerful tool in risk management, this is why we always work in full partnership with local human rights defenders and choose the most impactful advocacy actions according to their protection needs. We put particular emphasis on advocating for the specific protection measures for the different groups we work with: community-based HRDs, indigenous communities, women HRDs, LGBTIQ groups, grass-roots CSOs, among others.

Thanks to its HRDN membership,  Protection International (PI) has a prominent presence in EU related advocacy, starting with 2000 when PI played a played a role -together with other Brussels-based orgs - in pushing for an update of the European Union Guidelines on HRDs.
