Protection International (PI) is recruiting a Systems Administrator/IT Officer, based in Brussels, but supporting its work around the world.

PI is an international not-for-profit organization. It researches strategies and security management tools that protect human rights defenders, and shares its expertise in this area with people at risk due to their human rights work. PI sees human rights defenders as agents of change who form a pillar of free and just societies. In many parts of the world the defence of human rights evokes pressure, threats and attacks from state and non-state actors. PI works with local human rights movements to develop strategies and programmes aimed at preventing and countering such pressure. PI tailors its approach to context and profile. It works in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin-America, with presence in Thailand, Indonesia, Kenya, DR Congo, Colombia, Guatemala, and Belgium (head-office).

 

The role

With PI’s staff and partners being globally dispersed come challenges in collaborating on common projects between colleagues situated throughout the world. This recruitment is to strengthen PI’s capacities for in-house systems administration, remote IT support and online collaboration, with the aim to optimise PI’s workflow. All while using tools that ensure information security.

The Systems Administrator/IT Officer collaborates with the colleagues in head-office and those based overseas. (S)he reports to Executive Direction. The Systems Administrator/IT Officer works from PI’s head office in Brussels, with occasional overseas travel.

 

Tasks/skills include:

- plan migration from current IT infrastructure to new IT infrastructure

- implement the migration in collaboration with external support services

- internal and remote IT support for staff

- developing e-Learning modules (Moodle) for PI IT solutions for colleagues overseas (security awareness / use of tools / training internally)

- administration of Linux / Windows (/ Mac) based OS

- administration of network gear (switches, routers, firewalls)

- understanding / configuration of services (e.g. ssh/dns/http/smtp/....)

- in-house security audits

- patch management

- IT policy development and updating

- documentation of infrastructure, solutions

- hardware / software troubleshooting

- occasional hardware procurement

- managing/creating email accounts

- daily management/maintenance of online collaboration platform

- stays up to date with the latest developments in digital security and online collaboration for NGOs

- assist in PI website data integration/consolidation

 

Qualifications, skills, knowledge

  • University degree in IT, Information Management Systems
  • minimum two years of relevant experience as an IT Officer
  • very good experience local and external network administration
  • very good experience with Microsoft Windows 7 desktops administration; experience with Linux desktop administration and migration between Windows and Linux is an asset
  • experience with free and open source software (eg: LibreOffice, Thunderbird, Firefox)
  • self-motivated, ability to work on own initiative and as a member of a team; excellent communication (oral & written) and inter-personal skills; flexible and co-operative
  • specific experience in the field of the protection of human rights defenders is an asset
  • fluency in English is required. Fluency in Spanish, French, Arabic and/or Russian are assets

 

The offer

A one-year, renewable contract with a four months’ probation period, governed by Belgian law. 19 hrs/week under flexible arrangement. Minimal relocation package. The applicant will need to obtain a Belgian work-permit.
