Protection International will be present at the International Congress “The First National Action Plan for Business and Human Rights”, an event that will take place on 14 and 15 June in Seville (Spain).

Luis Enrique Eguren, Senior Advisor of Protection International, as well as other speakers, will analyze and debate the challenges and opportunities facing Spanish public administrations, companies, and civil society in relation to the First National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights, a project adopted by its government in July 2017, to apply the “Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights: Implementing the United Nations “Protect, Respect and Remedy” Framework” in Spain.

The Faculty of Law of the University of Seville, organizer of the congress, highlights three potentialities of this Plan:

“First, it can help to overcome the differences in power and access that often prevent those negatively affected by corporate activity from demanding a place at the decision-making table. Second, this instrument can help to create a dialogue at all levels of government and could give impetus to new ideas in government sectors that regard the issue of business and human rights as irrelevant. Thirdly, the Spanish Plan can contribute to creating a progressive agenda for the promotion and defense of human rights. By generating public accountability through the incorporation of benchmarks in the processes, and ultimately aiming for concrete measures, the Spanish Plan establishes a framework of benchmarks to assess progress in the implementation of the obligation to protect human rights in the face of business activity.
