Statement: Protection International demands the release of Burundian human rights defender Germain Rukuki

13 February 2018

This Tuesday 13/02, human rights defender Germain Rukuki will appear before the Ntahangwa High Court, Burundi, to face the spurious charges of “rebellion and undermining of State security”. Protection International expresses its support to Germain Rukuki against this unlawful criminalization.

Germain Rukuki was arrested exactly 7 months ago, on 13th July 2017. As a human rights defender, he stood for victims of human rights abuses and violations, including sexual violence and torture, for people detained in appalling conditions, condemned to death or missing, regardless of their origin, political opinions, or religious beliefs.

We are calling on the Burundian government to implement the Rule of law and free Germain Rukuki.
