THAILAND – The Southern Peasants Federation claims their rights to cultivate land

25 January 2016

The Southern Peasants Federation of Thailand – SPFT (Southern Peasant Cooperatives) demands the Government of Thailand to cease the renewal of land concession permits on state land which has the legal status of natural forest land suitable for farming. This land has been exploited by major palm oil firms for the last 30 years. In their struggle for justice, more than ten human rights defenders were murdered. The government has not pursued justice in any of this cases, with the exception of Mr. Chai Bunthonglek which is currently being investigated.

The Southern Peasants’ Federation of Thailand – SPFT (Southern Peasant Cooperatives) network formed in 2008 has been campaigning for the right to agricultural land in Surat Thani Province and other areas in the region, since it was established in 2008.
