Today Protection International (PI) launches its 2025 Impact Report.

This report features 16 stories and numerous Human Rights Defender (HRD) testimonies, highlighting PI’s proud achievements and transformations in a testing year for the Right to Defend Human Rights (RDHR).

2025 for PI was a year marked by leadership transitions and a rapidly shifting global landscape. Yet, it was also a year that confirmed an important truth: where there is repression, there is also defiance, creativity, courage, and hope.

Despite the challenges faced by each of PI’s teams and the communities of HRDs they support, in 2025 PI directly reached 4,994 human rights defenders and delivered over 262 specialised protection trainings across 32 countries worldwide. This report proudly features some highlights of PI’s work in 2025, including advancing disability-inclusive protection in East Africa; securing a landmark policy victories like Guatemala’s public policy for defender protection; and achieving critical SLAPP dismissals in Thailand.

Readers will enjoy learning more about PI’s special focus on collective psychosocial care, women and environmental defenders and defenders with disabilities.

Words of hope from PI’s global staff are an inspiring closing chapter to this impact report, underscoring the organisation’s commitment to building societies where the right to defend human rights is not just a declaration, but a celebrated and resilient pillar of democracy. Protecting defenders’ right to defend our human rights truly does matter now more than ever.
